Art Show

We had our district art show this past week.  Which is kind of funny considering we don't have art teachers. Well...anyways some of my students' art work was in it.

These were our winter scenes.

I had the students think of a winter scene and draw a rough draft.  Then I wanted them to zero in on part of the scene not the whole thing and make that their art work.  (like what they are suppose to do in their writing)

They drew their picture on black paper then either outlined it in glue or black pastel.  Then they colored in their picture with pastels.

They students really enjoyed doing this.  They kept asking to stay inside during recess to finish them.

Recycling Club

This year I was in charge of the Recycling Club. Only 4th and 5th graders were allowed to be in it.  In previous years, the students collected all the recycling from the classrooms to be dumped in the big bin outside our school.  This year I wanted them to do more then just that.  So this year along with collecting the recycling we made things out of recycled materials.

Project #1: Birdhouses out of milk cartons from lakeshorelearning

Project #2-Math Power Towers from mrshallfabulousinfourth

Project #3-Sandwich box out of a milk jug     http://www.curbly.com/users/diy-maven/posts/11213

Project #4=Magazine Holders out of cereal boxes

Project #5-Ball and Mitt out of newspapers and a milk jug from lakeshorelearning

I have really enjoyed doing it especially with this group of kids.  I started off with probably 15 kids and now have about 7 or 8 kids who show up for meetings consistently.

I don't know if I will be doing this next school year or not.  We have a lot of clubs at our school for such a small school.  My principal mentioned combining some clubs or getting rid of some.  So we will see.

Phases of the Moon

We have been studying the Phases of the Moon. My kiddos get that there is a pattern.  Some are still getting confused with the  waxing and waning.  Which I don't blame them because I still get confused too.

To help us remember we used Oreos to put the moon phases in order.  Of course they LOVED it!!!

Afterwards they got to eat the Oreos, which I was told was their favorite part. :-)

We used the off brand of Oreos and I will have to say they aren't as good as the orginal.  We used the orginal Oreos last year and they tasted and broke apart better.  Note to self always use the orginal Oreos even if they are little bit more expensive.
